| Whispertown2000 & Grand Ole
Party
posted December 1, 2006 Some
performances I recorded 11-29-06 at Porter's Pub, UCSD.
I also recorded the headliners The Elected, but check back for that recording later, hopefully. For now, here're the openers Whispertown2000 and Grand Ole Party.
Big thanks to Morgan.
Unfortunately, I had some issues with my recorder and only ended up with the last 4 songs of Grand Ole Party's set. They're an up n' coming band out of San Diego. Great stuff in the vein of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and White Stripes. Check them out at myspace.com/grandoleparty
E6 Townhall comp Elephant 6 fans throw some of their songs together in a charmingly enjoyable collection called Hear ye, Hear ye! The Townhall Comes to Order. Go ahead and give it a download.
Regina Spektor in San Diego
11/5/06 [Crap, I missed making an October post. I'll try to double-up November or December to make up for it and keep my once-a-month rate going.] After nearly a decade of recording shows with various crappy tape recorders, I've recently started upgrading my setup by buying a nice M-Audio Microtrack 24/96 digital recorder. Unfortunately, I didn't have the money to buy the accessories I need for it (such as decent mics and a battery box), so my first recording with it came out pretty bad. Heavy clipping/distortion in the loud parts. Hopefully I'll have things worked out by the next show I tape.
Until then, here's Regina Spektor live on November 5, 2006 at 'Canes Bar & Grill in San Diego, California. It's a lovely little venue right on the beach, marred only by the douchey security staff (Regina herself has harsh words for them after they do nothing when a fan up front passes out during the last song.) I posted a few of the highlights here, with the remainder of the show available in a zip file at rapidshare. Again, the quality is pretty rough, especially the full-band songs, so you probably won't want to bother with it unless you're really a big Regina freak. There might be a better recording of this show out there on a torrent site, but I don't know.

Frank Black acoustic
'93-'96
This is a collection I put together circa late '97. I
had a bunch of cool Frank Black acoustic radio sessions and stuff, and I
picked out my favorite version of each song. Most of these came
from 2nd or 3rd generation cassettes, so the sound quality isn't always
great. For a track or two, I had to "cheat" and go to the rare Hello
Recordings EP, including "Space Is Gonna Do Me Good" (which I recently
sent over to Dean at
frankblack.net for the great
podcast
they do over there, btw.)
Neutral Milk Hotel fans write
new NMH songs Want something, umm, different to listen to? The Giant Egg Leaks Over The Masses: Fanfare Vol. 4 may be just what you need. It's the long-awaited new Neutral Milk Hotel album... or so it claims. Several fans on the e6townhall message board came together to celebrate the songs of Neutral Milk Hotel on 3 separate occasions (Fanfares 1 through 3). Then they got creative on the 4th time, and created the mythical "new Neutral Milk Hotel album" by combining original music with Jeff Mangum's words. (read the forum topic for more info)
Mercury
Rev stuff
I've recently done a bit of revamping to my Mercury Rev fansite, Before The War.. specifically, I made a nice forum for it. If you're a fan of the band, please consider yourself invited to sign up and post. It's one of my oldest websites.. created way back in 1998. So in honor of all that, here are some rare Rev downloads: Mercury Rev - Peel Session, BBC. Originally broadcast July 29, 1995
Cartwheel [rapidshare link.. regular-click] .. Lovely track sadly omitted from See You On The Other Side. Only available as a bonus track on the Japanese import cd.
And here are some mp3s from various early bands featuring Mercury Rev members. These are all rare tracks that haven't been circulated much. (Big thanks to David Anderson for these.) They are mostly from copies of copies of 20 year old tapes, so the quality isn't that great. But still, very cool for Rev fans to finally hear. [update (9/27/06): the
below links seem to be dead, but I put the 10 mp3s in a zip on Rapidshare..

Well, I guess an update a month is my goal for this blog. One rare Rilo Kiley mp3 by request: I've recently come down with a MySpace McFever (huh?) and have been on there a lot this past month. Here are a few lesser known bands I've been diggin'...
http://www.myspace.com/darkhills (p:ano) and I apologize to other worthy bands in my list of "friends" whom I haven't mentioned. I'm still trying to go through and listen to everybody.

Rilo Kiley rare tracks
The vast majority of the mp3s I've offered here so far have been Rilo Kiley related (yet none of them have actually been Rilo Kiley until now).
These are some tracks that I originally shared on my untitled Rilo Kiley fansite back in December 2004, where they stayed for about a year, until the hosting dried up. So I'm happy to offer them again here for anyone who missed them the first time around.
The Biggest Lie (Elliott Smith cover) - live in SF
2/27/04
"The Biggest Lie" is an Elliott Smith cover done by Jenny
and Blake live in San Francisco. Very nice. This was only the second time
they played it. They first did it at the Elliott Smith memorial show in '03. None of these 3 tracks were online before I originally shared them (..ooh, ego alert!!). The KXLU song is off a rare not-available-in-stores cd called "kxlu live volume 7". The other two are from audience recordings. And in fact, the NMH cover actually got me in some hot water with the taper.. Apparently she asked me to keep it to myself, though I don't recall her saying that. Although we've since pretty much smoothed things over, I still kinda feel bad. But the track is just too damn cool to be kept secret! Links: buy Rilo Kiley's latest cd, More Adventurous, from Amazon. I'm sure Warners will appreciate it.
The Elected in San Diego 3/11/06
and stuff I kinda got into Melanie (aka Melanie Safka) a while ago thanks to my mom having a few of her old records which I transferred to cdr for her. Now, with artists like Joanna Newsom, Regina Spektor, and Feist making a name for themselves (ie, solo female singer/songwriters with strong, unique voices), she seems to be gaining cred in the indie community. So it was a nice surprise, but not too shocking when The Elected bust out a cover of a Melanie song at their headlining show in San Diego on Saturday 3/11/06 at the Epicentre. Here's the mp3: The Elected - What Have They Done to My Song, Ma (2006-03-11 San Diego) Note that this song is also called "Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma".. Yep, it's been officially released under both names.. so just pick one, I guess. I went with "What.." because that was apparently the title of its original release in 1970. Anyways, that entire day was a lot of fun. I organized a little pre-show party for some of us from the Rilo Kiley forum, complete with booze, food, and a sing-a-long jamboree. Here are a couple highlights from the party, but be warned that there was no practice, and most of the people there had been drinking, so the songs are very loose! Featuring Gav, The 'Stash, steeplejake, mojo shivers, BadNewsMama, b to the ree, and SuperME...
Also, here is a mix cd I put together for the party. It's an hour-long mp3. Some neat stuff in there. (Rapidshare link.)
And speaking of Melanie, here's another song from her that I really like:
Jenny Lewis with the Watson
Twins 3/3/06
Jenny Lewis' show at the San Diego Women's Club was a lot of fun. I took a several pictures.. some of which turned out ok. I sent them to rilokiley.net, so expect them to pop up in the gallery there soon. Special guest Mike Bloom (a.k.a. The Caveman) from
Rilo Kiley and The Elected played on several songs, so that was a nice
treat. The openers, Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins - 2006-03-03 San Diego Women's Club

The Elected - early
unreleased alternate tracks I was lucky enough to get a copy of the first Elected cd several months before its release back in 2003. I kept it to myself out of respect to Blake and the band, but now that it's old news, and the advance version has popped up in thrift stores, I figured it'd be safe to share a couple interesting tracks from it. First, a version of "7 September 2003" prefaced by an odd instrumental which was originally "track one" of the album, but omitted from the official release. The advance cd was credited as "Blake Sennett - The Senate" but changed to "The Elected - Me First" after it was discovered some rap group was already using the name The Senate. Apart from the intro track, it has only a couple other noticeable differences to its officially released counterpart: the absence of "British Columbia" which was a last minute addition requested by Sub-Pop, and the lack of the "glitch" that appears in the middle of the track "Go On", apparently a mini remix to shake the song up a bit. It seems most fans who've heard the advance cd prefer the original "Go On" and miss the weird intro song. So anyways here are the 2 tracks of interest:

Trader (Beach Boys) This is kinda random, but I had to share this song that I've been obsessing over pretty much since discovering it last month. It's likely my most-played track for 2006 so far. From 1973's Holland album. It's just an incredibly gorgeous song. Links: Holland Wikipedia entry
The
Elected & Stars in San Diego 2/12/06
The Elected and Stars were at the Casbah in San Diego the other night, Sunday 2/12/06. Unfortunately, that evening I got caught up watching My Neighbor Totoro taped off of TCM last month (btw, a new 2-disc DVD of that nifty film is due out March 7), plus I foolishly took an intermission to watch The Simpsons rerun. So by the time I arrived at the venue, I had missed the gist of The Elected's opening set. But at least I was there in time for the last song, "The Biggest Star," which was the one song I really wanted to hear. My friend Mojo Shivers mentioned it was a longer, more jammed-out version than when he saw them play in LA recently. And the recording would seem to affirm that, as it clocked in at about 9 minutes.
I got to talk with Blake for a couple minutes after the show. He graciously signed my copy of Sun, Sun, Sun and I bragged that I saw him with Rilo Kiley in the same venue back in '02 when they opened for Rainer Maria. (Though I think I misspoke and called them "Rainer Marina," which is usually the kind of thing that happens when you try to talk people in bands you like.) He was pretty cool, though.
Stars put on a terrific show, too. My recording of their set didn't come out very good, however. I met up with my friend, the lovely Sarah, who was feeling quite tipsy, so that made for a doubly fun show, but there's laughing and talking and mic blocking. Plus I did some drinking between bands myself, so I was kinda sloppy with tape flipping (btw, yeah I still use an old school cassette recorder for taping shows, which is pretty arcane by today's standards, I know.. I'll probably get a minidisc one of these days) and I did a bit more hooting and hollering than any self-respecting bootlegger should do. So bottom line, my Stars recording isn't really worth posting in its entirety, but the first 3 songs were salvageable.
I took a handful of pictures, but they didn't turn out that well either. Here are the best of them:

first post / Neutral Milk Hotel
"secret mix" Well, I decided to turn this page into a pseudo mp3 blog. Really just a place to occasionally share some rare mp3s and plug bands I like. I bought a year of cheap webspace, so I figured I'd have some fun with it. I'll try to post an update every week or so. In The Aeroplane Over The Secret Mix
