[reviews]

Ben Savage [Corey Matthews] was there. I talked to him for a little bit after the show, 'cause he was sitting behind me. He was singing along to "With Arm Outstreached". It was a sit-down show, so my pictures didn't turn out so well. This one guy's head kept getting in the way. The only down side was that they weren't selling any Rilo merch besides the "Execution" cd.

[another review]

oh man
i'm so happy there's a recording
i hope things work out
that was one hell of an amazing show
on top of the setlist ArtIsHard mentioned...
there was a new song that jenny and mike bloom wrote
there's a new one that blake sang alone
and the encore was a new song that they finished earlier that day and jenny was tap dancing!
the tap dancer from tilly & the wall gave jenny tap shoes
she was so cute!!!
they also covered an elliott smith song
i forget the title but it was so sad
it looked like blake was tearing up, during that song and the one where jenny and mike sang
he was sitting on the floor with the people
and jenny sat in the audience when blake sang his own song
and for august, they had a drum track going from the lap top
added nicely to the song
they also played jim
and spectacular views with blake singing instead of jenny
if i could just listen to them live for the rest of my life i'd be so happy....

I've been seeing their shows for the past three years, don't think i missed one in SF since end of 2001 except January's first acoustic show which i instead saw in Chicago. I flew in from New York on my way to London (frequent flyer shennanigans) just to see this show. AND this was the best I've ever seen!

The Hall they turned out to play in was indeed the Swedish American Hall, not duNord. It was absolutely beautiful with vaulted ceilings, wood beams, and a balcony circling. The seating was all row seating with people standing around the edges (rather crowded, not capacity: comfortable yet appreciative). The hall was well lit, so you could see faces in the crowd and I think the band appreciated that. The only problem I could see was that there was no standing ovation in the first RK show I've seen with seating. Punks.

Everything clicked in the show. Jenny even came on at the end with Jaime's tap shoes (from Tilly and the Wall). They performed a song they had just wrote. Jenny was holding the lyrics in her hand even. The song sang to the idea of a lover who is always welcomed back. It turns out though that it is California that always welcomes you back. This song is incredible and I can't wait to hear it again. Possibly on my own return to California.

This song, and hearing 'I Never' again, was especially poignant for me because I was at the concert with a bunch of old friends from SF. I left last fall to begin a trip to Europe. In the crowd was my ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend. As Rod would say, 'the first cut is the deepest.' While Jenny and Blake didn't make me feel that much better with these sappy love songs, the did make me feel accompanied in my feelings.

Again, what a lovely show. I look forward to reading other reviews while I'm traveling. Hope the band makes it to Belgrade.

'rainingvodka' reports:

There are two recordings that I know of. Mine...and Blake's...both schoeps mics.

I talked to the soundman after the show about Blake's rig (he had those mics clamped to the balcony rail and run down to a minidisc deck...i think it was a sonosax preamp? not sure got only a brief glimpse at it) and it's for possible official release...maybe on itunes, maybe in some other capacity.

i will not release my recording until word on this possible release surfaces, to avoid infringement.
