®ilo kile¥ BOOTLEG TRADING

I got a fever. and the only prescription is more Rilo Kiley bootlegs. Listed on this page is the collection I've been able to put together so far. If you've got one/some not on this list, please let me know so we can work out a trade. I'm especially interested in old shows.. I'll trade you double, maybe even triple, for any pre-2002 shows.

BOOTLEG: Rilo Kiley's first CD -- deluxe edition!
FORMAT: CDR
LENGTH: 79m
QUALITY: [*****]
SOURCE: cd > cdr
NOTES: This nifty collection compiles all their early (pre-Take Offs And Landings) stuff onto one handy disc. Perfect quality.. All this stuff is sourced from the original, now out-of-print CDs (none of the tracks are MP3-sourced.) Check http://members.cox.net/rilokiley/ for more info on the different pressings.
TRACKLIST:
1. Frug
2. Papillon
3. Always
4. 85
5. Sword
6. Asshole
7. Gravity
8. Troubadours
9. Teenage Love Song
10. Glendora
11. Steve
12. (hidden track: they say it rained the day your mother gave you away)
13. The Frug (early mix)
14. 85 (early mix)
15. Teenage Love Song (later mix)
16. Troubadours / Annoying Noise of Death (hidden track)

[1-8] Initial Friend EP
[9-12] Rilo Kiley 1st pressing
[13-14] Desert Blue soundtrack cd
[15-16] Rilo Kiley 2nd pressing

You can take your pick of 2 slightly different versions of this disc..
* Original version: The volume levels have been untouched, with the hidden tracks being slightly quieter than the other songs, and the long gaps of silence left intact, just as they appear on the original releases.. so through the magic of your CD player's 'program' function, you can faithfully recreate either of the 3 pressings.
..or..
* Fixed version: I've "fixed" the hidden tracks by making them as loud as the other tracks, so you don't have to adjust the volume when they come on. I also removed the long gaps of silence, so you don't have to wait around for the hidden tracks to start. Basically the Fixed version just makes for a smoother listening experience.

BOOTLEG: 12/07/01 Becker Amphitheater, Cal State Fullerton, Fullerton, CA
FORMAT: VHS
LENGTH: 46m
QUALITY: [**+]
GENERATION: unknown.. probably around 2 or 3. {RL}
NOTES: One of the earliest bootleg videos of the band (earliest one I got, anyways). Outdoor daytime show. Some rough spots (even a head-cleaning message pops up at one point), but decent quality for the most part. The camera is focused on Jenny most of the time, and it's a little windy out, so that adds to kind of a stalker-vibe to the video. But still cool.

BOOTLEG: 2/21/03 Good Records, Dallas, TX (webcast)
FORMAT: CDR
LENGTH: 32m
QUALITY: [*+]
SOURCE: webcast > tape > cdr
NOTES: Same show as the filler above (in-store appearance. Just Blake and Jenny.. mostly acoustic), but different recording. This is from Good Records' live webcast. It's via a soundboard feed, but unfortunately there were buffering issues, so most songs jump around a few times. I fixed it up a bit, but it's still pretty crappy.. so if you want this show, the above audience version is probably your best bet. But one plus for this recording is it includes several minutes of chatter before and after the show.. but it's nothing all that interesting.
TRACKLIST:
1. pre-performance chatter
2. Absence of God
3. Go Ahead
4. The Good That Won't Come Out
5. It's A Hit (Holiday For Hanging)
6. With Arms Outstretched

FORMAT: CDR
LENGTH: 20m
QUALITY: [****]
SOURCE: radio broadcast > soundcard > cdr {JB}
NOTES: Really nice radio session and interview. This show is pretty common.. webcast available online. However, this recording is not from the webcast, it's direct off the radio.. so it's a bit better quality than most versions going around.
TRACKLIST:

BOOTLEG: 2/23/03 Houston, TX, Fat Cat's
FORMAT: VHS
LENGTH: 57m
QUALITY: [***]
GENERATION: 1 (from taper's master {RA})
NOTES: The filmer couldn't get very close to the stage (Rilo is big in Houston!), so to shoot Blake, he had to lift the camera over his head and film blindly.. resulting in some extended legs/feet footage and other bad shots. But it's not too bad.

BOOTLEG: 3/6/03 Little Brothers, Columbus, OH
FORMAT: VHS
LENGTH: 70m
QUALITY: [****]
GENERATION: 1 (from taper's master{Kevin})
NOTES: Very cool video. It's a 2 camera mix.. so you get a couple different views it switches between. One is at the back of the place (steady wide-shot), and one is around the middle of the floor (getting tight shots). The angle mixing is a little boring at first, but livens up as the show goes on. The picture and sound quality are excellent. Great show, too. "It's a Hit" is the first time they played it as a band.

NOTES: Good picture and sound, but slightly incomplete.. the camera battery went out in the middle of "Spectacular Views (EOAT)", so it's missing the last 2.5 songs. Shot from up close on the far right side of the stage, right next to Jenny. Some good close ups. Kinda gives you a feel of being backstage, watching from the wings, at times. cool video! One of my favorites.

One girl in particular keeps screaming "Jenny, you fuckin' rock!" over and over and over. You fuckin' suck, girl.. enjoy the show, but not at the expense of others. LINEAGE: CDR (Straight off the editing workstation.)->EAC->FLAC
TAPED/TRANSFERED/MASTERED BY: Persistent Sound
RECORDING NOTES: Accoustric Set from Blake, Jenny, and Mike (Bloom).
Poor sound from the audience recording means this is mostly a board tape.
As usual I added a little EQ, reverb, and compression to try and make
it less stark. Yes, as you my have heard, the power went out during
Portions For Foxes, so during that section we revert back the audience
which gets a little worse due to all the excitement.

SOURCE: SBD->SBM1(48K)->M1
LINEAGE: CDR (Straight off the editing workstation.)->EAC->FLAC
TAPED/TRANSFERED/MASTERED BY: Persistent Sound
RECORDING NOTES: Although I had permission to record, the venue refused
to allow me to set up a Mic stand (or tripod) and so the audience tape
was mostly unusable. Luckily the mix on the board tape was very close
to even, and needed only a little EQ to bring up the bass. I also added
the tiniest touch or reverb to take the stark edge off and compressed
the top 6db of peaks to bring the quiet sections up. I also edited out
the first two minutes of the encore where Blake is preparing to play
"Ripcord", gets a request to play "Simply Irresistible", tries to talk
Jenny into joining in - and mostly fails. This allowed it to fit on one
CD.
