Desert Blue (film & soundtrack CD)
released: 1999
songs: "The Frug" and "85" are featured in the movie and on the soundtrack CD. Both tracks are slightly different than on the 1st Rilo Kiley cd, with sparser vocal mixes. "Papillon" is also featured in the movie, but isn't on the soundtrack CD. Parts of "85", "The Frug", and "Papillon" are briefly played quietly in the background at points in the film. And a shortened edit of "The Frug" is played again in the middle of the end credits.
Rilo Kiley got a big break in June of 1999 when three of their songs were played in the movie Desert Blue which starred Christina Ricci and Kate Hudson. Two of the songs made it on to the soundtrack and were coincidentally the same two songs later featured on Dawson's Creek, "The Frug", which was the lead single from the CD, and "85". "The Frug" music video, which featured clips from the film, premiered on MTV 120 minutes and was put into rotation on MTV and MTV2. The song was also mentioned in Rolling Stone which lauded "...everything you could ever want in a rock novelty hit".
The "Frug" video is included as a bonus feature on the DVD of Desert Blue. Funny thing is it doesn't mention the name of the band, so someone not familiar with the band would have to carefully watch the film's closing credits if they wanted to figure out who it is.

Availability: DVD is in print (Amazon)
The soundtrack CD is apparently out of print, but can be still be found used without too much trouble (try Amazon or eBay). (label: Razor & Tie)
There is also a one-track promo CD for "The Frug" that was given to radio stations by Razor and Tie in 1999. There is no cover for the CD, but there's a sticker that reads: "Team Clermont: The Frug From Rilo Kiley is the first single from Christina Ricci's new film Desert Blue. Going for spins starting June 18th-19th." (picture).

Dawson's Creek (television show)
#311: Barefoot At Capefest. Episode # 46
(Original Air Date - January 12, 2000)
"The Frug" and "85" are played during the show.
"The Frug" is heard in the scene from that episode when Jack and Jen are walking in the camping area on the concert grounds. "85" was prominently heard as Jack and Ethan are walking along the beach just as Ethan finds his camping equipment is stolen.
"We felt honored an grateful to have our music on a show with the integrity and credibility that Dawson's Creek has so rightly earned. We feel proud also that they chose to play our songs during such poignant points in the episode." Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley
Availability: Dawson's Creek - Complete Third Season DVD set is in print. (Amazon)

Once & Again (television show)
Episode #19: Cat-in-Hat
Aired: Monday, April 3, 2000
The band appears as themselves and performs parts of "Always", "The Frug", and "Plane Crash In C".
Blake explains: "Dan and Sue Paige, the creators of the show, are fans of our band just from our live shows and our little cd. They just called us up one day and asked if we'd want to be on their show and we said why not. Yeah, it was kinda weird hearing us being referred to by our own names on national television but we had a fun time watching it and seeing our band on tv. Definitely a first on both accounts."
The footage from "Always" and "Plane Crash In C" is actually the band performing live, but "The Frug" (the song most prominently featured) is lip-synced.
To sum up the episode (or at least Rilo's part)... The son character and his buddy are looking at instruments in a music store when they bump into Jenny and Blake, who invite them to their show that night (in a weird, flirty way). Then later in the episode, those guys show up to the club where they enjoy the live performance of Rilo Kiley. But what's this? The kid's mom just so happens to be at the same club! She's with a guy and they're having a deep talk about their relationship or someshit. Then the guy asks her to dance as the infectious opening of "The Frug" starts, and she reluctantly accepts and they have lots of fun on the dance floor. But after the song, the mom bumps into the son and is mad at him for using a fake ID to get into the club. The end.

Music to get Undressed by, Vol. 1 (soundtrack CD)
Soundtrack to an old MTV show called Undressed, released in 2000. For a long time this was super-rare.. so rare, in fact, that many fans were skeptical that it even existed! But I found a copy on eBay, and a few months later it was found still being sold at mtv.com, where it was originally available. When it first came out, they had plans to release the CD to regular stores soon afterwards, but that apparently didn't happen, and the show has since been cancelled. The CD doesn't even appear to have been released on a proper record label; It says "© 2000 Undressed Inc." and on the spine it has the catalog number 805914.
The Rilo track is the original (Initial Friend) version of "Always".. there's an ever-so-slight difference in the mix (only a huge rilo dork such as myself would even notice it!): the computerized intro ("1, 2, 3, 4") is in both channels, while the EP version is only in one channel.

Availability: out of print.. no longer available at mtv.com. Try eBay.

So what went down on the episode featuring the song? Well, not only did the song get played, but some characters on the show mention liking Rilo Kiley. One of them even holds a Take offs and Landings CD. It went a little something like this:
Guy #1: "Why don't we talk about Rilo Kiley?"
Guy #2: "Who?"
(Guy #1 holding the 'Take offs and Landings' CD)

And...
Guy #2: "Wanna listen to Rilo Kiley?"
Girl #1: "Oh my God, You like Rilo Kiley?"

Later, they are briefly mentioned again, and "Always" is heard at the end of the show. Aired: March 5, 2001

Too Smooth (film) a.k.a. Hair Shirt
released: 2001
Featuring music from Rilo Kiley.
The movie Too Smooth (starring Neve Campbell, Katie Wright, and Rebecca Gayheart) features "Always" (Initial Friend EP version) played in the opening credits. Later in the movie the Take Offs And Landings version of "Always" is played. The beginning of "Teenage Love Song" is heard in 2 different parts of the movie. Thanks to fan queen c for the info! She says the RK tunes made the rental worth it, but otherwise the movie isn't very good.
The movie was originally released in 1998 under the title Hairshirt (or Hair Shirt).. that version apparently does not feature the Rilo Kiley songs. It was later reissued in 2001 under the title Too Smooth, and this release has the RK songs edited in. I don't think a soundtrack CD was ever released for it.
Availability: DVD available at Amazon

Don's Plum (2001) movie
Featuring music from Blake and Rilo Kiley.
A movie Blake Sennett did the music for. Because of a crazy lawsuit, the movie won't be released/distributed in the US, but is available most everywhere else. The score was 'lo-fi,' and apparently used stuff like accordions. Jenny also has a part in the movie and sings a little in one scene.. "Downtowwwwwn" with harmonica accompaniment. There are at least two versions of this movie. The re-edited version is the one with Blake's score on it (it's the version without the production numbers on the bottom). This version also contains the Rilo Kiley tunes "Always" (in the background for a minute) and "Go Ahead" (featured at the end) plus something by Blake called "Walk on By".
Also worth noting, the score additionally features song contributions from Mike Bloom (who would later join Blake in Rilo Kiley and The Elected) and Slydell (the band that featured The Watson Twins on backup vocals before they teamed up with Jenny).
Unfortunately, no original soundtrack and/or score CD was ever released.
Links: More info on the film can be found on this page.
Availability: Since it was never released in the US, your best bet for finding it would be a bootleg or import copy on eBay.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (television show)
Episode 114 : Older And Far Away (14th episode of Season 6)
Original Air Date: Tuesday, February 12, 2002
Rilo Kiley's "Pictures of Success" plays in the background in one scene.
It's the one where Buffy's birthday bash goes into overtime after Dawn accidently makes a wish to a vengeance demon, trapping the gang inside the house. "Pictures of Success" plays quietly in the background (F-word, and all!) as Buffy opens her presents.
Availability: Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The Complete Sixth Season DVD set is in print. (Amazon)

KXLU Live Volume 7 (compilation CD)

Xbox EXHIBITION Demo Disc (Vol. 1) (Xbox video game)
Release Date: November 15, 2002
Xbox "sampler" disc with a few game demos and extras, such as music (including Rilo Kiley's "Execution of All Things")
There's a subsection on the disc called "Music" where you can listen to songs by dozens of bands. Rilo's "Execution of All Things" (the title track) is on there. No video at all unfortunately. But on the Rilo Kiley page there also a picture of the album cover (the two faces). Here's what the liner notes say about rk: "Rilo Kiley is, by many listener's standards, the best indie rock band in Los Angeles. Almost constantly on tour, the band has accumulated quite a large following all around the US. The Execution of All Things is the band's third release, out this fall on Saddle Creek Records."

Songs can also be downloaded from the game disc to the Xbox Hard Disk to be played back in-game.
Availability: This can be found on eBay pretty cheap.

Devil In The Woods (vinyl 7")
This magazine, issue #4.3: "The Year Omaha Broke" includes a 7" with a Rilo Kiley track
Rilo Kiley's song: "After Hours" (Velvet Underground cover)
Devil in the Woods issue #4.3 (came out in late 2002) features a long article about the Omaha music scene / Saddle Creek. Inside the magazine came a 7" record with otherwise unreleased songs from Bright Eyes ("Blue Angels Air Show"), Rilo Kiley ("After Hours", a Velvet Underground song), and Sorry About Dresden ("Candid Camera"). Jenny and Blake appear on the cover, but RK isn't featured much in the magazine.. just a few lines.
more pictures: magazine cover/foldout
Links: Devil in the Woods
Availability: out of print. Limited to 666 copies. The record was apparently only available to subscribers, not in newsstand editions. It's been seen closing on eBay anywhere from $20 to $80. Luckily, RK's track has since been released on the "Execution" UK single, so there's little reason for fans to shell out that much for it.
