Someone emailed me about this in January 2007. Supposedly Rilo
Kiley played at some convention thing in Hawaii back in '99, and the
set(s) contained unreleased songs and a bunch of crazy covers. At the
time, I kinda thought the guy was messing with me, but then in October
2007, Blake and Jenny confirmed it to be true during their appearance on
Loveline (Dr. Drew also gave a talk at the convention thing).

hey,
I was looking at your RK song list and found one that's missing. I only
heard it once, when they were hired to play at this organization in '98.
it's called Cousin Cousin. The lyrics have something to do with dragging
or pulling someone across the room. One of the most beautiful songs I've
ever heard...and when I asked jenny about it (a few years ago at a show)
she sort of remembered it, but said they never played it again. Thought
I'd let you know about it though. Maybe 2 other people there even cared
about what they were hearing. All the best,

Wow, cool.. I've never heard of that one. I don't suppose you have a
recording of it, or even know of one existing? Also, could you give me
more info about that show? What was the organization? Do you remember
the exact date? Where was it held? stuff like that? I'd love to add it
to the gigography of my site.
thanks again!

Hmm.. Ok, the show was during the summer of 1999
in Hawaii. I think it was the big Island (Kona?). And the organization
is called YPO (young president's organization). They were hired
basically as entertainment for the children of all the rich adults
there. YPO, as far as I know, has two retreats per year in exotic
places. I was there because they asked my dad to give some lectures, so
I had the good fortune to meet Rilo and basically they played about 3
private shows for just about 50 of us, full of Madonna covers, songs off
their first press album, and a few that I'm sure never made it onto a
pressing (Cousin Cousin I only remember because it was one of the most
beautiful songs I'd ever heard, and THE most beautiful I'd heard played
live at that point).
Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the hotel, or the restaurant
where they played for us, or the exact month. They were really sweet
though, and gave us all copies of the first press of their album. I
still have mine autographed and framed on my wall. I also do not have a
recording or know of any.
best,
m

Ha, cool. You swear you're not yankin' my crank here? Madonna covers?
lol. :)
but no, thanks a lot! Must've been awesome. i'll add that info to my
site soon. if you ever stumble upon more details from those shows (ie,
did you keep a journal back then or anything?), please let me know.
Michael Salter to me
yeah I'm serious! they did some crazy madonna
shit..and a couple bowies as I recall.
I'll see if I can find something I may have written. I do remember
keeping some journal at the time, but I have no idea where it would
be...
word,

I didn't hear back from him after that. Here's the clip of the band
talking about it on Loveline:
