w/ Superchunk, The Good Life

[review]

Well, after driving like a maniac into Chicago, and spending 1/2 hr driving around to find a parking space, I finally made it to the Rilo Kiley / Good Life / Superchunk concert (after a quick rushed bite to eat). It was a good thing we rushed through our meal, as Rilo Kiley came on at 6:40 (While the Ticketmaster ticket said the concert started at 7:00) but we made it just in time.
Wow! What a concert! This was by far the best Rilo Kiley concert I've seen, the audience was much more involved in the concert than they had been at the previous Metro show. RK's new drummer, Jason, rocks, he did very well, and is VERY energetic behind the drums. Pierre was apparently ill, and his brother took over for him, he did very well, but Pierre was missed. Jenny sang awesomely, as usual. However, this time, unlike the previous Metro show, the person running the mixer was awake, and we got to hear Jenny play the little (Casio?) keyboard, and the tape she plays into the Guitar. Blake sang a little bit (Unfortunately not as much as Jenny), and sounded excellent. This time I knew all the words to their songs (I intentionally didn't listen to their second CD until after I saw them in concert the first time, so hearing the CD would remind me of the concert, instead of vice versa :) ) and sang along quietly myself, as did several others. Unfortunately the crowd that showed up early enough to see Rilo Kiley seemed to mostly be composed of RK fans. Perhaps they didn't get as many new listeners as they would have liked, but this was more likely a result of Chicago's infamous rush hour, (Notably worse on Friday) than anything else. Though, 2/3 of the way through their set more people started filtering in, and seemed to get into the music.
On a disappointing note, my good camera was in hiding (Which I found as soon as I got home, of course) and the backup camera I know from experience doesn’t deal well with low light, and doesn't have an off switch for the flash anyway (Does anyone know how RK feels about flash photography of their concerts, I forgot to ask afterwards) I did however get my original RK Debut CD signed, got to talk briefly with Blake and Jenny, and got some buttons, and a CD for my brother in-law.
