05/15/02 The Shelter, Detroit, MI

w/ Ozma, Radio 4

[review]

I arrived the Shelter about 7:15 armed with an ewok and some flowers.
I found Jenny and gave her the flowers and the ewok for Sofia.
I then met up with fellow RK fan PaulG and four of his friends.
There were a total of 7 RK fans total. It was at this time that I
made a mistake. I asked if I could take pictures and the management
said no, always remember it is easier to get forgiveness than
permission. So I regret this article is photoless.

Radio 4 from NYC went on first from 7:30-8 then RK from 8:15-9 then
Ozma from 9:15-10:15.

Radio 4 was better than expected. They were really in the groove at
times, very loud though. They need some polishing on lyrics, but I
was impressed nonetheless

Now that the room was warmed up, Rilo Kiley turned up the heat
further and Rocked the House. RK was going crazy on stage, leaping
about and giving the music all they had from their souls. Jason and
Blake were long men possessed on their drums and guitar. Both
have grown their hair out so it added to the crazy atmosphere to see
it fly about as they rocked. I tried to join in the energy of the
moment and dance, but due to space constraints I was only able to
jump up and down in a frenzied manor.

The set list was as follows in no peticular order:

Picture of Sucess
Science Vs Romance
Plane Crash in C
Wires and Waves

and 3 New songs (Forgive me if I botch the titles)

Chemical Stress
Fusion of All Time [ed. note, probably Execution of all Things]
I don't mind waiting [ed. note, Capturing Moods]

My favorite of the new ones was Chemical Stress. I can't wait for
the new album to come out. It should be out by the middle of
September.

After their set I was able able say Hello to Jason and Give Pierre
the Ewok for Sofia. I hope she enjoys the little guy. Jenny and
Jason really made my day by remembering me. Jason remembered my last
name and Jenny personally came up took the time to ask me how I was.
While I love their music I think it is their personability and
ability to remember all their fans in so many cities that make them
the best band in the world.

Now if I may address a more serious issue. The destruction the the
"Always" keyboard. I spoke to Blake about the incident. He claims
that Jenny just got in to the song and acidents happen, but I think
was just trying to keep a united front. Stiff upper lip and all
that rot. Also the question of will Always ever be played live
again...the answer is probably not any time soon. When I heard about
the keyboard incident I tried to find a replacement. I can solemly
swear that keyboards like Blakes are no longer made. I searched
everywhere. I believe the only hope for us to hear Always again is
for a miracle to happen and a similar keyboard to be found at a
Garage Sale by the band. All we can do now is pray.

After RK finished the Crowd was on fire and Ozma fed the flames.
Ozma played at my first RK concert in Chicago and they get better each
time I hear them. Ozma brought the house down with double encores of
1988 and Nothing and we all went home happy.

[another review]

Didn't they play 4 new songs? I thought it went Wires and Waves, two
new songs, pictures, science, plane crash, chemical stress, and
another new song? Maybe I'm just crazy. Still, this was probably the
best concert I've ever been too. I got a picture with Jenny and a
picture with Jason and autographs from everyone but Pierre. Everyone
was really nice and I'm really looking forward to seeing them again.
I did write a 6 page concert review but I'm not gonna post it here.
If you really want to see it, it's at my website
(http://taintedcandy.tk) if you really care. I didn't get any shots
of the band playing but as soon as I'll throw the picture of me with
the various group memebers up when I get them developed.

Anyway all of you that get to see RK on a regular basis are extremly
lucky. They put on such a great show and I'm really looking forward
to the new CD and hopefully another show in Detroit. Well, that's it.
