[review]

hello all.

wanted to share info on the houston show last night.

well to begin, the show was moved from its orignally scheduled venue - Fat Cats (formerly known as Mary Janes) to Walters on Washington, which is located right across the street.

some kids had been drinking on Fat Cats lot one night and had been busted by the cops. because of this their liquor license had been revoked and they were still in the process of getting it back. thus the move to the liquor-friendly venue, and all the 7&7 sales that come with such establishments.

the move wouldnt have been a big deal except for a few small things. first, the stage is slightly lower, thus its that much more difficult to see the band. second, they have an old-piece-o-shite soundboard and because of this they were only going to run vocals and guitars and aux instruments thru the soundboard (leaving out drums and bass and lead guitars). also the piece-o-shite only has mono outs, thus no stereo signal. though this may not seem like a big deal, it is when you want to tape the show for all its glory through the soundboard. thank god i had a mono to mono cable with me, or all Rilo fans everywhere would have been that much poorer for it.

anyway. that was the move. now for the opening bands.

all great bands, which is really nice when youre going to a show. Statistics was tight and were nice guys too. M Ward didnt rock quite as hard as he usually does, and there wasnt much of his usual "i need to hit my strings like a muthafucka" vibe going - but he still rocked. one thing that i had read before the tour, but that no one has seemed to confirmed is that everyone in Rilo is supporting his set. I was really impressed by this and it sounded pretty damn tight. Jenny even sang backup on one track (and it was oh-so-pretty.) I guess this could be documented under "Rilo Kiley Notable Appearances" on the various fansites.

which brings us to the Kiley.

very tight. very on. rocked as they always do. great set. i need to listen to it to get down the order, but notable highlights were an acoustic version of absence of god, bulletproof, and a version of Room 8 with M Ward (who did a very nice speedy guitar solo at the point where the banjo used to do its thing. Room 8 sounds a bit different then it did in Feb 2003. more on this when i listen to it. also they played both versions of Spec Views, with the EOAT one having a cool outro attached to it where Jenny sang

"and the kissing leads to touching and the touching leads to sex and then there is no mystery left. and baby your bad news, just bad news."
(though its art and should be taken as a means to evoke emotion, i need to say that i totally disagree with Jennys statement that sex leads to a lack of mystery. she obviously needs a more interesting boy )

and of course who could forget the fantastic With Arms Outstretched featuring Denver of Statistics and the really cute girl from the audience. what more could you ask for from an emo, indie rock show then a bevy of fine girls on stage singing "and if you want me, you better speak up, cause i wont wait." priceless.

anyways. ill post the setlist later. and upload some tracks to the good gav to share with all.

peace.

the M Ward track that Jenny sang back up on was "Sad Sad Song."

Now that ive had an opportunity to listen to it, ive got to say that Rilos instrumentation behind Ward was really really nice. Though I havent got a chance to check out M Wards record I have this feeling that Rilo are doing their own thing on his tracks, as opposed to following what he has on a record. Theres some really Rilo Kiley-esque keyboard playing doing the set - and Blakes lead guitar is just really pretty. He uses slide on some tracks giving it just a nice "smooth" feel.. it kinda reminds me of Bucky Baxter, or Whiskey Town (Ryan Adams) alt-country stylings.

peace
