[review]

Opening bands.. Tim Kasher solo electric. He came out, joking around, then apoligized because he had to sing really sad songs. after a minute or two of trying to start the first sad song, he kept busting up, so instead started with a less-sad song.
The Album Leaf.. cool mellow instrumental music.. great stuff to listen to while kicking around the house, but doesn't make for great entertainment at a rock concert. There were 2 tall guys who were earnestly headbanging to the 2 opening acts like they were Metallica or something.. that was funny. But hey, go for it, fellas.
M. Ward.. I liked his set better than the first time I saw him. Broke a string at one point, but didn't miss a beat (well, ok, maybe ONE beat).
OK, headliners.. Rilo Kiley.. No written setlist! Pretty much Jenny would suggest which song to play next to Blake (off mic) and he would either nod ok or grimace no.
Blake mentioned he and Duke are from San Diego and they had family at the show. This was evidenced by conspicuous gray-haired people taking pictures from the side of the stage. It was cute.
Because the place was a teen rec center, they like sticking to an 11:30 curfew, so the kiley's set was only an hour. Not only did "Spec Views" not have the "You're Bad News" ending, it didn't even have the usual "Take My Hand" ending!
The other show I saw on this tour (Henry Fonda, LA) had a much better setlist, with some out-of-the-ordinary stuff.. the San Diego show was only songs off the 2 main albums. Nothing new or rarely-played. But oh well, i shouldn't really complain. It was great to see em.
Over all, I enjoyed the SD show better, mainly because I had a better spot.. pretty much right in front of Jenny.

After the show I got my CD cover of TOAL signed by the band. I decided not to go with the "i love you guys so much that i made a 2nd-rate fan website for you"-angle, and instead stuck to the trusty "great show; big fan; you guys rock" comments. I don't think they like my site anyways (if they even know about it at all).. i was afraid if i told them about it, they'd ask me to take it down. maybe i'm just paranoid.
The 3 guys were cool.. all seemed to be in a hurry, but were able to take a moment to sign for me and happily accept my moderate gushing. Jenny had a group of about a dozen people around her. I got her to sign, but i don't think she even looked at me.. seems she was in a hurry to leave.. but she was still pretty nice to everybody.. though she did, understandably, decline to sing "over the rainbow" for one guy, (she's too shy) but thanked him for asking. And as she was leaving she turned down a couple girls who wanted to get a picture with her.. very sad scene! but she wasn't bitchy about it or anything. why am i spending so much time on the post-show crap?
well, anyways.. it was a cool show.
