[review]
I was pretty damn close, so I will have awesome pictures as soon as I
get them develpored and scanned (which is A.S.A.P.) Jenny also gave me
one of her pics, when she came with me to sing "With Arms Outstretched."
This is one of their best shows I have ever been to. I can't wait to
hear a nice version of "Simply Irrisistable." Blake totally owned that
song :)

This was one the best RK shows I've ever been
to or listened to.
Gav got to sing with Jenny!!
Blake played a little bit of Steve!!
Undies were thrown onstage!!
There were exclusive t-shirts and canvas bags!! (The design is two
guitars side by side: one is pink and one is blue)
Okay, it's really late, I'll have more details later. Then again, I'll
be gone all day and then I'm going to the Troubadour show. haha!

the performance - amazing as always. i loved
the new songs, especially the one called "i never" (i think that was
what it was called) where jenny sang alone with the keys. loved the
little bit of "steve" that blake sang. and of course the covers were
great. i think everything awesome about the show has already been
mentioned. but yes... awesome, awesome show. can't wait to get my
pictures developed...
regarding the glasshouse, i've been there a few times, and they don't
mind cameras at all. i've never had a problem getting them in. but as
for tape recorders and video recorders...no idear.
oh yeah. haha, about the panties. they were thrown by a friend and i,
and NO!, they were not used! haha. we just wanted to throw em up for fun
with lame/funny messages written on em, but we DID want them to know
that had not been previously worn. hence, we left the tags on. (bought
from big!lots, for the record) haha. in any case, blake's reaction was
priceless!

The handbags SOLD OUT during the Pomona show,
they made 100 of them and sold them all.
I'll get my pictures sent in probably on Monday. It looks like everyone
was on Blake's side of the stage, I have pictures from Jenny's angle.
P.S. - That's a purple Winnie the Pooh Megaphone used on Rock & Roll
Suicide.
P.P.S. - Whoever stole Jenny's roses: for shame. Luckily, I had Gav snag
the other bunch, so they can be returned to her at a later date or else
they surely would not have been saved.

Left home a little after 2pm. Arrived in Pomona a little after 4pm..
not bad. Met up with Greg and his friend, Autumn. We just hung out and
talked a bit, waiting for the hours to pass until we could get inside.
It was kinda trippy when after a while I realized I kinda knew Autumn
from over the internet from a while back. Anyways, we finally got in a
got nice spots right in front of the stage.
First act: Mike Bloom.. just him and his acoustic guitar (an harmonica
in a song or two).. sort of in the "M Ward mold".. amazing guitar
player, average singer/lyricist. The crowd seemed to like him, though he
jokingly got a hard time about his shoes from one girl in front.
Second act: Future Pigeon. after they soundcheck for a few minutes,
Jenny comes out to introduce them. She mentions they let Rilo Kiley open
for them once or something, and she thanks them for being so cool. They
weren't too bad. White reggae, mostly instrumental. So much for the
"acoustic evening" that had been advertized; they were fully electric,
with about a dozen people in the band. They had a few good jams that the
crowd got into, but that repetitive reggae guitar riff thing ("dit, dit,
dit, dit".. well, i can't really imitate it with words, but hopefully
you know what i mean) started to gnarl my brain after a while.
Headliner: RILO KILEY! or, more acurately, HALF OF RILO KILEY! Jenny &
Blake! They started with "better son/daughter".. a nice, intimate
rendition. Five songs in, they bust out the new stuff. "More
Adventurous" is a touching song about Jenny wanting you to "let me be
loved." Oh, Jenny, we all love you! The next song was another new one,
"Somebody Else's Clothes".. another one about her wanting to find love.
It's kinda odd to see a woman that beautiful sounding so sad and
desperate for someone! But then again, I guess I wouldn't want to hear a
Debbie Gibson-style love balland from the band. So yeah, let's stick
with the heartbroken/lovesick songs!
Anyways, next up is a Robert Palmer cover, "Simply Irresistible". Blake
sings lead on this one. They really transformed this into a very pretty
love song, with not much resembelance to the original, save the lyrics.
Oh, I should mention that Mike Bloom, the opening act guy, came on stage
to help out during RK's set on several songs. The extra guitar really
help out the next song, "Absence of God", which kinda had a Jim Croche
"Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)" thing added over it. Then they
did another new song, "It Just Is".. I believe written for the late
Elliot Smith. It was ok, but a bit of a downer.. talking about
"everybody dies" and such. Then the final new song was "I Never", just
Jenny alone on her keyboard. Probably my favorite of the new tunes.
Though she was admittedly nervous about playing it, Jenny conjured up
Janis Joplin a few times, sounding great. funny story about this song..
at one point during the song, she accidentally started to sing a line
too early. Realizing her mistake, she mouthed the word "fuck!", as
people who mess up are apt to say. Probably only the people in the front
noticed it. But what's funny is that the line she accidentally sang
early was "So let's.."
So what she sang was, "So let's (fuck!)"
I guess you had to be there. But I got a kick out of that!
"With Arms Outretched" - The band brought up a bunch of their friends,
including the other 2 Rilo Kiley members (Jason & Duke), Mike Mogis,
Jenny's best friend Morgan (from the lyrics fame!), a lucky girl out of
the audience and a lucky guy out of the audience. My night had already
been made when during the song Jenny smiled at me and kinda seemed like
she was singing to me... but I just about passed out when she leaned
down to me and we were singing together! Then she stuck the mic in my
face and I almost choked remembering the lyrics.. but I think I handed
it ok!
Then she left me to go start the hand clapping part, and I was probably
blushing pretty bad. As the song was winding down she signed to Blake to
keep it going once more around, but he didn't notice and ended. But
Jenny got them to start it up one last time. Pretty cool. When it was
over Jenny said, "That was so epic!"
They closed the main part of the set with a cover.. i was like "hey, i
love this song!" and soon realized it was Bowie's "Rock 'N' Roll
Suicide". Jenny sang part of it through a funky purple Winnie The Pooh
megaphone.
Then they left the stage for a few minutes. The guy and girl from the
audience were still sitting at the back/middle of the stage. I couldn't
stop thinking that, were it ME the lucky fella up there, I would SO
TOTALLY have picked up one of the guitars on stage and played my own
crappy cover version of "salute my shorts"! But it wasn't meant to be..
and probably for the best, as I would've probably just embarrassed the
hell out of myself and pissed off the venue staff. Plus it turned out to
be the first song the band played after they came back from the encore!
Well, actually, before they could get to it.. they had to endure the
obligitory old never-played-anymore song requests.. "frug", "glendora",
"steve", etc. Actually, they almost played "glendora".. and asked if
anyone knew the words who would be willing to sing it. The guy on stage
excitedly said he knew it. But instead Blake gave in and played some of
"Steve".. just about the first 15 seconds of it, before abruptly
stopping at the "fucks my mom even when she cries" part, embarrassed at
the song and it's "Blink 182 lyrics."
Eventually they got around to "Salute My Shorts" - but with a twist:
Jenny sings it! very cool.
They closed with another switch-a-roo, "Spectacular Views" with Blake
singing! (from Execution.. not to be confused with the 'old name' of
"Salute My Shorts")very cool. Soft and sweet version.. If that band Iron
& Wine covered "Spectacular Views", it would sound like this.
So that was it. Great show. Played for a little over an hour.
Greg talked me into grabbing some nice fake roses that Jenny had left on
the stage.. she had probably received them before the show as a birthday
present, her b-day being a day or two earlier. The plan was to wait to
talk to her after the show, but we were all tired and had long drives
ahead of us, so we nixed that play and decided I'd try to give the roses
back to her at the next show.. whenever that will be.
