Details article, 11/97...
"Ernie-C, the guitarist from Body Count, had hooked up with Perry. He said,
"Yo, Perry wants to meet you." I met him and he said, "I'm trying to do this
Sly Stone song, 'Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey.' You know it?" I said, "Yeah,
I'm with it." He said, "Well, we got the cameras right here, man." We actually
shot that film of us singing that for Gift that first day. We just knocked
it out."
LIVE:
Played at about half of the Lollapalooza '91 shows.
ADDITIONAL INFO:
* Perry had the idea of covering this song for a while before it happened. It
seems he first asked Angelo Moore from Fishbone, but the two never hooked up
for it. Supposedly, Angelo was worried about Perry's drug history.

Through it all, Farrell continued to cross cultural boundaries. He traveled
to Mexico with his longtime girlfriend and collaborator Casey Niccoli to get
married in a blood-sharing Santeria ceremony he shot for a feature film, Gift,
which he convinced Warner Bros. to finance in lieu of a video. The movie, featuring
scenes of Perry and Casey copping drugs on the street, culminated in a searing
duet between Perry and rapper Ice-T on the Sly Stone song, "Don't Call Me Nigger,
Whitey," just another example of how Farrell kept banging his head against artificial
musical and social borders.
* In addition to being featured in Gift, the audio from that version
was released on a rare Warner Bros promo cd titled Trademark of Quality.

Don't call me nigger, whitey
Don't call me whitey, nigger
Don't call me nigger, whitey
Don't call me whitey...

Nigger, nigger, nigger, nigger, nigger, nigger, nigger
I'm proud to be a-- say it loud
I'm proud to be a-- say it loud
I'm proud to be a-- say it loud
I'm proud to be a-- say it loud
Don't call me whitey, nigger
Don't call me nigger, whitey
Don't call me whitey, nigger
Don't call me nigger...
Whitey
Whitey
Whitey, whitey, whitey, whitey, whitey, whitey, whitey, whitey
I'm proud to be a-- say it loud
I'm proud to be a-- say it loud
I'm proud to be a-- say it loud
I'm proud to be a-- say it loud
NOTES: (Ice-T's parts are in italics).
NOTES ON THE ORIGINAL:
Jane's/Body Count changed the song a bit. The original Sly Stone version has
more lyrics and it's sung by only one
person.
Don't call me nigger, whitey
Don't call me whitey, nigger
Don't call me nigger, whitey
Don't call me whitey, nigger
Well I was down, across the country
And I heard two voices ring
They were talkin' angry to each other
And neither other could change a thing
Don't call me nigger, whitey
Don't call me whitey, nigger...
FAN INTERPRETATIONS:
From ? (found somewhere on the net)...
Once upon a time, a very long time ago indeed, Lollapalooza was actually somewhat
groundbreaking. The traveling music festival's opening year found Ice-T and
Perry Farrell sharing a stage, trading verses of "don't call me nigger, whitey,"
and "don't call me whitey, nigger." It was an actual chill-inducing moment,
giving the audience a snapshot of something bigger than themselves, making them
feel special for just being there.
