Rock N Roll

BACKGROUND:
Everyone in Jane's Addiction is a big Lou Reed fan, so it's no surprise the band covered one of his songs. Their version has been praised many times. In fact, Lou Reed has mentioned that their version is one of his favorite covered songs.
"Rock N Roll" was the first song Eric and Perry ever played when they first jammed together in late 1985.

WRITTEN:
By Lou Reed. Originally appears on the Velvet Underground album Loaded, released 1970.

LIVE:
* Played occasionally in late '86 and early '87 at Jane's acoustic shows, usually as a medley with "Sympathy" following. Also, played electrically once or twice in '88.

* Played live at least once in 2002 (5/21/02 Standard Hotel, Los Angeles)

ORIGINAL LYRICS:
Jenny said when she was just five years old
You know there's nothing happening at all
Every time she puts on the radio
There was nothing goin' down at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
She couldn't believe what she heard at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
You know her life was saved by Rock 'n' Roll
Despite all the amputations
You could just dance to a rock 'n' roll station
Jenny said when she was just five years old
My parents are gonna be the death of us all
Two TV sets and two Cadillac cars--
Ain't gonna help us at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
She don't believe what she heard at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
You know her life was saved by Rock 'n' Roll
Despite all the computations
You could just dance to a rock 'n ' roll station
And it was alright...

JANE'S VERSION LYRICS:
Now, Jenny said when she was just about five years old
You know that nothing happens at all
Every time she put on the radio
There was nothing goin' down at all, not at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
And she couldn't believe what she heard at all, not at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
Man, you know her life was saved by Rock 'n' Roll
Rock 'n' Roll
Despite all the implications
You can dance to a rock 'n' roll station
And it was alright, it was alright
Now, Jenny said when she was just about five years old
Man, money's gonna be the death of us all
You know, two TV and two Cadillac cars
Man, it won't help me at all, not at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
Man, and she couldn't believe what she heard at all, not at all
She started dancin' to that fine fine music
Yeah, her life was saved by Rock 'n' Roll
Rock 'n' Roll
Despite all the implications
You can dance to the rock 'n ' roll station
And it was alright
Yeah, it was alright
Now, Jenny said when she was only five years old
Man, there's nothing gonna happen here at all
Every time you put on this God damn radio
Man, there was nothing goin' down at all, not at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on this L.A. station
Man, she says I can't believe what I heard at all, not at all
She started dancin' to all that fine fine fine music
Her life was saved by Rock and Roll
Rock 'n' Roll
Despite the implication
You can dance to a rock 'n' roll station
You know it was alright
You know it was alright
And it was alright... it was alright...
