Stop!

WRITTEN:
By Jane's in mid 1986. Dave came up with the music.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS:
Perry live at Cal State Northridge, 5/2/87...
"This is about the destruction of the world. You see, we're peace loving people. We believe we can save the world-- this band. Do you believe that?... Course not, man. You don't believe that. We can't do shit. This one's called 'Stop.'"

Eric in Guitar Player, '91...
A song may be going in a certain direction, but a mistake can happen, and we'll say, "Wait--that works better." An example is the slow break in "Stop": Initially it was an E groove, but once I played a G instead, and it eventually became a change from E to G.

LIVE:
Played occasionally in '86 and '87. Rarely in '88. Occasionally in '89. And then at almost every Ritual and Lollapalooza tour date ('90-'91).

The Jane's Relapse played "Stop" at every show in 1997. Also played at just about every show in 2001 and 2002.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
- From BAM magazine, Issue 347, November 30, 1990...
"While the philosophy behind Ritual De Lo Habitual may be a mite exotic, the ideas behind the songs themselves are thoroughly down to earth. 'Stop' is a metallic plea to 'turn off that smokestack and that goddamn radio'-a rather conventional, ecological cry in the industrial wasteland, but absolutely mesmerizing in its effrontery."

- a video for "Stop" was made.. with mostly live footage shot by Casey at a special Jane's concert at Mt. Baldy, California 7/7/90.

- live footage of "Stop" is shown very briefly in the Soul Kiss video, 1989.

- Spanish intro
The Ritual version has a spoken Spanish intro that kicks off the album. It was done by a friend of the band's. I believe her name is Cindy Lair, though I'm not sure about that. She also did the intro live at a few Ritual and Lollapalooza shows and at a couple Relapse shows. Perry introduced her as 'Cindiana' or something.
An exact translation of the intro has not been formed due to the fact that it's spoken in grammatically poor Spanish. and also the many possible double meanings. But it's probably something like this...
"Senores y Senoras," -- Ladies and Gentlemen,
"nosotros tenemos mas influencia" -- we have more influence
"con sus hijos que tu tiene," -- over your children than you do,
"pero los queremos..." -- but we love them...
"creado y regalo" -- created and a gift (bred and spread)
"de los angeles" -- of the angels (from Los Angeles)
"Jauna's Addiction" -- Jane's Addiction.

LYRICS:
Here we go!
No!
No one...
No one!
No way!
Gonna stop, now; go!
Save the complaints for a party conversation.
The world is loaded, it's lit to pop and nobody is gonna stop...
No one... No one! No way! Gonna stop, now; go!
Farm people, book wavers, soul savers, love preachers!
Lit to pop and nobody is gonna stop.
One come a day, the water will run,
no man will stand for things that he had done...
Hurrah!
And the water will run...
One come a day, the water will run,
no man will stand for things that he had done...
Hurrah!
And the water will run...
Will Run!
Will Run!
Gimmie that!
Gimmie that -- your automobile,
turn off that smokestack
and that
goddamn radio - hum...
along with me...
Hum along with the t.v.
A-a-a-a-m-m-m-m-m-m.
No one's-gonna-stop.
