"Live ‘86", also known as "Live ‘86 – The First Recording", is an album of an early live performance by Jane’s Addiction. This album was recorded at the Co Co Club in Los Angeles, CA in August of 1986, and was released by Eye Scream Records on August 17, 1997. The album bills itself as the first live recording of Jane’s Addiction, and while it is a very early recording, it is by no means truly the first live recoding of Jane’s Addiction. Around the time of its release, many fans thought this album was a bootleg. However, this is a legitimate release that was okay-ed by Perry Farrell himself. The sound quality found on this album is extremely poor, and is unlikely something that fans would listen to frequently. The track listing displayed on this disc is incorrect, and the sound on Had A Dad cuts in and out, with the song spread across several tracks. However it is an interesting early peek into the band during their infancy. This disc is now out of print and existing copies tend to be sold at fairly high prices. This is really a release for collector’s only. The soundcheck includes bits of "Suffer Some" as well as a jam of "When The Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin.

notes: One of my favorite Jane's recordings, it's a college radio appearance of the 4 guys (and the DJ) joking around and playing some songs acoustically. Sound quality is real good, though there are some cuts between songs, unfortunately.

notes- The video is pretty decent quality, especially considering how old it is. The cdr is not just the audio taken from the video.. it's from a completely different source.. it includes about 30 seconds of "soundchecking" from the start of the show which aren't on the video. There is some crowd talking, however. This show is often dated 8/28/86, though evidence seems to indicate it was actually 8/20/86.

Notes: There are two versions of this recording, both sourced from the soundboard. The version commonly found on mass-produced bootleg CDs (such as Live & Profane and Live Too) is A+ quality, but omits "Slow Divers", "Jane Says", and "Summertime Rolls". There is a more complete version (43:39), said to be taken from Dave's personal tape, but is lesser quality (tape hiss and occasionally choppy). This version, while more complete than the cleaner version, is still missing the first minute or so of "Slow Divers" and a few minutes off the ending of "Summertime Rolls" (cutting at about 2:25). The apparent final song of the night, "Ocean Size", isn't included on any known recording. This show is sometimes mislabeled 10/23/1986, 2/14/1987, or 10/15/1987 Dallas, TX. On the silver bootleg CD versions, 4 additional songs are included after "Mountain Song" ("No One's Leaving", "Then She Did", "Ted, Just Admit It", and "Ocean Size"). These songs are not from the Pyramid '86 show, but rather a different unknown show, likely from the Fall '87 tour opening for Love & Rockets.

Notes: Pretty good soundboard recording. This show is very common. Often mislabeled 1/27/87. It was bootlegged on a vinyl called Love Junkies, then the vinyl to transferred to a boot CD called Whole Lotta Love. Additional notes: Right after the band signed to Warner Bros, they figured they should put to tape all the songs of theirs that were unrecorded up to that point. This was done for publishing reasons, and also as a way for WB to get an idea of which songs they liked and wanted on the album. The songs were recorded live in the studio, without overdubs. This session has been widely bootlegged (Song List, Classic Versions), and since been officially released on the rarities box set, A Cabinet of Curiosities. One song recorded here, "Suffer Some", had not been officially released in any form until 2003, when the revamped incarnation of the band dusted it off (and reworked it a great deal) for inclusion on their comeback album Strays.
Note about "June Street Studios": Many bootleg collectors list this recording as being from June Street Studios. This is one of the biggest fallacies regarding Jane's Addiction bootlegs. The bootleg company that first released it, Totonka, casually mentioned June Street Studios in the small print on the back of the bootleg CD, Song List. Since no other location info was given, fans assumed that was where the recording was from. But actually, June Street Studios was the name of Totonka's headquarters, where they put their bootleg CDs together. Just look on the back of another of the company's releases, Live And Profane (which consists of some live Jane's shows). First of all, the shows are mislabeled, bringing the company's credibility into question. And near the bottom is reads, "mixed + cut @ June Street Studios with Diatonic Processing." So hopefully that clears things up. Again, Jane's Addiction never recorded at June Street Studios, it's just the home of a bootleg company.

Notes: this is a soundboard recording, but not a very good mix. The bass is extremely quiet for most of the show, and so is the guitar at some points.
But it's a cool show. Trip Away is joined in progress and sounds pretty rough at first, but soon gets better. Macio is abandoned midway because Dave's guitar wasn't tuned right. This is the show that "whole lotta love" was taken from for the vinyl 7'' and bootleg CD of the same name.

Notes: Somewhere between "A" and "B+" quality soundboard, depending on lineage and generation. The first 4 songs of this show have been released on silver bootleg CDs, such as Abdication and La La Palooza. The longer recording, however, is more uncommon. Even on the longer version (43:25), it abruptly cuts directly after the final song, so perhaps more songs were played that night (seems short for a headlining set). This recording, especially the shorter mass-bootlegged version, is often mislabeled as 12/31/87 or 12/31/88. This is the only known full live performance of "My Cat's Name Is Maceo". It was attempted at a show shortly before this one, 7/8/87 Sacramento, but there it was abandoned in the middle due to the guitar being out of tune. This show features two guest performers. Laura Espinosa (unsure spelling) sings backing vocals and plays percussion on both "Ted" and "Maceo" (marking one of the very few times Jane's Addiction has featured live backing vocals). Angelo Moore of Fishbone plays sax on "Maceo".

But unfortunately again, this recording is piss poor. I mean it literally sounds like someone was taking a piss on the tape recorder. "3 Days" sounds especially bad.. maybe someone shat on the tape recorder during it? There are some good moments, though, like the Stooges cover, "1970".

Notes: Great or awful show, depending on personal taste. Perhaps the funniest Jane's show, thanks to Perry joking around about Wrestlemania, how cold Canada is, and giving shit to the bouncer(s) apparently being rough with the crowd, even altering a few lyrics, most notably in "Pigs In Zen".
Sounds like "Ocean Size" was played after "Summertime", but it's cut from the master recording.
This recording is from the bootleg CD "Skin & Bones", though there it appears pitched somewhat slow. I've corrected the speed here.

notes: last show of the tour.. well, that leg of it anyway. perry's voice seems to be on it's last legs too and he's admittedly drunk. quality is not great, but could be worse (Mnt is especially off kilter). the part on the Kettle Whistle album where Perry is talking about how it's not cool to steal a friend's woman is from this show. so that means there's a perfect sounding professionally recorded version of this show somewhere. that'd be cool to hear, even though this is definitely not one of Perry's better performances. Listen to me try to give a snooty critique of a Jane's show! loosen up. he's singing about loving whores and urinating in the shower, for fuck's sake! i should just say, "perry was fucked up, but the show rocked, man!"

NOTES- like 7/23, sweet sounding recording, and amazing show. the show is a digital clone of the sbddat, except for the first 6 or so minutes. Until a few seconds into Whores, it's from a tape, so there's some hiss there. Most copies of this show in circulation are missing the beginning all together, so that is better than nothing.
